IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy). Dr Aznar
IMRT is an advanced form of external beam radiation therapy that uses computer-controlled linear accelerators to deliver precise radiation doses to a malignant tumor or specific areas within the tumor.
It helps to either give higher doses to tumour while keeping toxicity the same (isotoxic approach) or to give same doses with better protection of healthy tissues.
Key Features:
- Modulated beam intensity: The radiation dose can be adjusted across the treatment area, allowing high doses to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue
- Used for many cancers, including head and neck, prostate, breast, and sometimes brain tumors (especially large or irregular ones).
